What is the different between a Strat and a basic electric guitar?

A stratocaster is a basic electric guitar.

A strat has three single-coil pickups, a Les Paul has 2 humbuckers, a telecaster has 2 single coils, all those 80s hair metal guitars are 1 humbucker with 2 single coils and a whammy bar.

Oh yeah, a strat has an old school whammy bar on it too.

As a Strat is an electric guitar (in my opinion the ONLY electric guitar) not sure what you mean.
Sound wise, the Strat has a cleaner, brighter sound than a lot of other guitars. The Stratocaster is extremely versatile and has been used for a variety of purposes, from the classic "Fender twang" to the slicing solos of Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to the fat, crunching tones in Ritchie Blackmore's "Smoke on the Water", while it is unable to fully match the trebly highs of Telecasters or the warm lows of Les Pauls.
Structure wise, the pickups are different from a lot of other guitars, especially the Fender Lace pickups, the bridge and even the fretboard.

A "Strat" basically is the original blueprint for the makings of a guitar......Designed by Leo Fender of Fender Guitar...in the early 50s I believe. The Fender Stratocaster is the most sought after and most copied guitar BODY in the world...as apposed to the Basic electric guitar, which in most cases if you speak of Basic you'll probably find some knock-off Strat Designed "BODIED" guitar.....cheers

either way I'm Fender for life

A stratocaster is one of the most popular guitars. I'm not sure there is just a basic electric guitar. I think what a lot of players like is their versatility.

Quality, sound, maybe a whammy bar. But a Fender Strat, you know the difference just by playing it. The sound is incredible. (Dont bother with Squier or anything, if its not proper Fender, its not a proper Strat)

well if by basic you mean cheap tehn id say quality. please ntoe they make both mexican and american strats, teh american strats are about 1200 i think. they have great tone, a nice flat fret board ( its not as rounded like say a les paul) and a thinner neck then soem guitars which makes it easier to play for some. aslo the start has a tremolo ( or whammy) bar standard. not all other guitars do

a strat pretty much is the basic electric guitar, but fender makes many varieties of the one classic.
