Specifically why do fish need oxygen. Like what do they use the oxygen for?

Same thing we use it for to oxygenate the blood to live. They just get it in a different manner.

The same thing we all need it for. Burning energy. Oxygen + glucose = energy + CO2 + H20
Actually, I don't remember if that's the exact reaction.
