They still use the Neilson systems (special boxes on the TV's of a selected bunch of folks to track their watching habits - overall ratings are averaged and extrapolated from that)

It is an outdated and wildly inaccurate system that really needs to be updated since so much money depends on the outcome. It's a pretty crooked system if you ask me. Many a good show has gone to it's death because of bad ratings.

Nielsen TV Ratings randomly select a sample of homes in the community to represent the entire TV audience. Once contacted you get a chance to participate in a select sample. They may have asked you to fill out a diary, keep a television meter in your home, or just answer some questions by mail or over the telephone.
