I'm doing an independent study project this month and plan to read a few books by Russian authors and learn to read more of the Cyrillic alphabet on the side. Anyhow, I would like some recommendations as Amazon isn't being terribly helpful. I currently have Lolita which I will read. I am not planning to read War and Peace as I would like to cover books that are not too lengthy. If it helps, I am also a freshman in college.

Do "The Death of Ivan Ilich" by Tolstoy. Very very short book. His earlier novels were long, which by the way he claimed were crap, but Ivan Illich is short. It's my favorite book of all time. Crime and Punishment might be too lengthy but, something by Dovestky would be good.

Notes From Underground by Dostoevsky is good, and, as I recall, it is just over 100 pages. Crime and Punishment is even better, but it is a bit longer.
