I'm just wondering-- why do you liberals have a problem with executing criminals who have comitted horrible murders, but feel no guilt about sucking out the brains of an innocent, unborn child? And for those of you who believe in God, I'd like to find out why you think abortion is "ok" with your beliefs. I'm just not getting this, and if any of you out there could answer, I would be greatly interested in seeing what you think.

Sure. I believe in God also and well I'm not a liberal I wont say what I am but I am left wing.

I believe that an abortion is a womans choice as it is her body and the government has no right infringing upon that.
I do not believe in Capital punishment because it is so final and there is always a chance of being wrong. It is also not a deterrent to crime as evidenced by our murder rate per countries that do not have capital punishment. I also believe the government has no right in deciding who lives or dies regarding capital punishment. It is too unevenly applied to be effective.

My belief in God, is just that MY belief in God. I still support abortion and will not judge someone else when I dont know what they are going through.
I separate my political beliefs from my religious beliefs, because not everyone believes the same as I do. You will never get everyone to believe that abortion is wrong. That is a simple fact. Education and keeping it safe and legal are the better options.

The larger punishment for criminals in my mind is letting them rot in jail.

As for abotion you are going on the assumption that if we are pro choice we are ok with "sucking the brains out of an innocent child." First of all let me correct you what you have described is a late term abortion. Not an abortion performed in the first trimester. I am not in favor of, nor would I ever have either procedure. I believe it is taking a life. However I do not feel that it is my place to tell other people what to believe or do i.e. many people do not beleive it is taking a life. You cannot legislate beliefs. If a woman has an abortion that is between her and God and nobody else. Abortion is legal and no one is forcing you to have one.

This liberal doesn't have a problem executing criminals who have committed horrible murders.
I don't feel guilt about sucking out the brains of an innocent, unborn child either. I have never done it, so I have no reason to feel guilty.
And I am sure glad you happened to mention God.
I do believe in God and I have mixed feelings on abortion.
However, if abortion is a sin, I choose to leave it up to God as to how to deal with the sinner.
I feel the same way about homosexuality--If it truly is a sin, then I think God is more than capable of dealing with the sinner.
I am certainly not in a position to judge others' behavior whether it's "sinful" or not.
I have always wondered why the religious right feels they have the moral authority to dictate the behaviors of individuals based on their interpretation of God's word.
God is all-powerful; leave it up to God.

Perhaps for the same reason that right wing fundies have no problem with military action, wars, death penalty, etc, but think abortion- even if it's just a zygote, a few cells is sinful.

But- in my case, an unborn zygote, group of cells, or 8 week old life, is not yet a human. While it has the potential to grow to one, it cannot survive on its own, is not self aware, etc. So- it's a decision on where we believe human life truly begins. I prefer to draw the line at 3 months rather than conception.

And- the death penalty serves none of the purposes of its original intent. It doesn't save money and it doesn't serve as a deterrent. We are one of the few counties in the world that still has the death penalty and to me it seems old world and barbaric. To say nothing of... what if you make a mistake?

So- I think that's a fair answer. You don't need to agree, but those are my reasons.

Oh- FWIW, I'm a registered Republican (but not a Bush supporter).

Contrary to what you might think, few Liberals, if any, support partial birth abortions. In fact, few people support abortion. What they DO support is a woman's right to make the choice. When a woman makes the difficult decision to have an abortion, the consequences of this are between her and God. This is a moral issue that should not be part of the legislative process. It's nobody's business. What we should be striving for is sexual education to help prevent unwanted pregnancies.

People do not believe in capital punishment for a number of reasons. First, from a practical perspective, with our complicated appeals process, it cost more to put someone to death than to feed them for 50 years. Second, our judicial system is anything but perfect. Over the last century, dozens of innocent people were wrongly executed. Third, many believe that life in prison with no chance for parole is a worse punishment than death. Fourth, those who truly believe in God, do not believe that He gave us the right to take a life. That is not our role.

I know that there is a conflict here between capital punishment and abortion. However, both issues are emotionally charged and highly controversial.

I doubt that most liberals have problems with capital punishment.
I doubt that most thinking people on either side of the political spectrum are affected as desired by shock terminology such as your question employs. Even Nancy Reagan Has come-around in favor of stem sell research...with good reason.
As to abortion - carried-out to the max, abortion being a sin, abstention from sex must also be a sin. What nonsense.

Question for you. Why is it that Bush( a conservative) is against the "sucking of the brains of an unborn child", but all for the execution of criminals.
Look at both sides of the fence before you start firing off questions like that.
I am speaking this from a purely catholic viewpoint. (not that i necesarily agree with it.)
Personally, i think that there should be certain criteria for the use of either way to kill people. Also, the use of death row must be streamlined for it to have any type of effectiveness

You're just generalizing...putting everyone who views things differently from you in the same category. I think that you'll find that nobody is perfectly okay with what happens with abortion, just the way that nobody really particularly enjoys killing people, even if they've done something to deserve it.

The bottom line for me and a lot of people that I know is that things like abortion and the death penalty are choices. One is made by a woman, with help from her doctor, her family and her faith, and the other by a jury. I don't particularly like either of them, but my opposition to them is not that I want to use the power of the government to prevent them, but rather by way of my personal belief system by passing on those values to my family and those close to me. Otherwise, I don't believe its right for a minority of people in a country to impose their beliefs on the majority in order to advance their own agenda.

Like it or not there are a LOT of people who disagree with you, and their opinions are just as valid as yours are.

Interesting point.....now turn it around.

How can pro-lifers find abortion outrageous but killing a person by execution is somehow justifiable? Doesn't the Bible say "thou shall not kill"....isn't God is the ultimate judge?

Just curious...not advocating either side.
