With another mineral. Or some common items such as a Fingernail hardness of 2.2, a steel nail hardness of 6, or a penny hardness of 2.5. Here is the Mohs scale of hardness.

you need a smooth surface, such as a cleavage plane in order to see the scratch. Remember that the hardness works the other way also. Try to scratch a piece of glass, if it leaves a scratch your hardness is at lease 6.

Depends what equipment you are using ...

Vinyl is very difficult. The best bet is to rig the deck up to a tape player or, even better, digitalise it and feed it into your PC.

If using a CD, simply pause the track in the right place, and then record it. Clean the sample up with software freely available on the net.

There are sites where you cann request the sample you want.
