Mythbusters (a show on Discovery Channel) devoted a whole episode to the mentos reaction.
Without going into the science of it, typically, any carbonated drink will work, although diet drinks (cola, 7up, pepsi) will be most effective. Also, if you want an even bigger explosion, use rock salt instead of mentos.

Oh yeah - we tested several brands. Diet coke did the best but any carbonated beverage will work. You can but the cheap store brand on sale and go with that.
... I like diet it is a bit less sticky.

Yeah, but it doesn't work as well as it does with diet Coke. It's the chemical reaction between the ingredients in both items that makes it wildly "explosive."

yea it should bubble with pepsi too. They basically mirror eachothers taste, trying to get their recipe as close to Coke as possible. Coke taste better anyway.
