The Glory Road (The Best Years of Our Lives)
All Quiet on the Western Front
For Whom the Bell Tolls
From Here to Eternity
Dr. Zhivago
The Young Lions
The Bridges at Toko-Ri
Note these have all been done into movies. Hope these are contemporary enough. Seems like 'Nam & Desert Storm are mostly bio's; many excellent but not novels.

Norman Mailer's "The Naked and The Dead" is a classic World War Il novel set in the pacific. Most Vietnam books are true memoirs written by Vietnam veterans, therefore not in the novel category. The best of these is Born on the 4th of July written by Ron Kovic. Also Kurt Vonnetgut's Slaughterhouse Five is consided a war novel.

Currently I am reading some Kurt Vonnegut (Slaughter House Five) and I'd have to say it is my favorite in a long time and it has true historical content!

It is a novel by best-selling author Kurt Vonnegut. One of his most popular works. He is widely regarded as on of the best American authors of all time.

The book combines science fiction elements with an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, the aftermath of which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point.

When the book was released, the bombing of Dresden was not widely known and was rarely discussed by veterans and historians. The book led to an increased awareness of the bombings and a reevaluation of the justifications given for aerial bombing of cities by the Allies during the war.

I don't know if John Hershey's Hiroshima would be contemporary enough, but it is about the dropping of the A-bomb on Hiroshima. It is written in a journalistic fashion, so it is a fairly quick read and can get pretty graphic.

I would also recommend "flags of our fathers" .. loved it! His other book "flyboys" has a lot of history on chi chi jima (?sp) but not a lot on the actual war itself.
