In order to understand this, you need to understand what a fraction is. A fraction is simply a part of a number (a fraction of a number). So if you have a pie and you cut it in half and you give one piece to your friend. You have 1/2 a pie or 1 out of 2 slices. Now if you put those two slices together. 1/2 + 1/2 You would have 2/2 (two halves) or 1 whole pie. Got it? Now say you have two pies and you cut one in half and give it to your friend.

You have 1 (whole) and 1/2 (a half) pie or 1 1/2 pies. If you take your friends half pie and put it together with your 1 1/2 pies you'll have 1 and 2/2 (one and two halves) pies or 2 pies.

Let's look at our example. You have 75 pies. You are cutting them all in thirds and handing them out to your friends. You've given out 43 and 1/3 pies. (You have a lot of friends). Now you want to know how many pies you have left. Well since each whole pie is really 3/3 (three thirds) you can represent 75 pies as 74 3/3. The key to remember is when adding and subtracting fractions you have to have what's called a common denominator. That means the number on the bottom of the fraction has to be the same. For example: You can't subtract: 3/4 - 1/2 because the denominators are not common (they are not the same.) You would have to find a least common (or just a common) denominator first. We know 2/4 is the same as 1/2 so if we changed 1/2 to 2/4 we can now subtract 3/4 - 2/4. We would simply subtract the numerators and keep the same denominator. So 3-2 is 1 and our denominator is 4 so our answer would be 1/4.

Going back to our problem...74 3/3 - 43 1/3. We already have common denominators so we can subtract 3-1 is 2 and keeping our denominator we have 2/3. Now the whole numbers we would keep together. Subtracting them separately 74 - 43 is 31. So our complete answer is 31 2/3.

To recap. Fractions are just parts of a whole. So 1 can be represented as 1 or 2/2 or 3/3. 2 divided by 2 = 1, etc.

In order to add and subtract fractions you need to have a common denominator. Once you have that...only subtract the numerators (the number on top) and bring your denominator over. So 2/3 - 1/3 would equal 1/3.

When subtracting fractions with a whole number you keep the whole numbers separate. So 74 3/3 - 43 1/3 would equal (74 - 43) 31 (3/3 - 1/3) 2/3 -- 31 2/3.

Remember 75 would equal 74 and 3/3 because 74 + 3/3 (3 divided by 3 = 1, so 1) = 75. If you just do 75 3/3 you'll have 76. You need to subtract 1 from the whole number and make it a fraction.

I hope this helps. I know it's lengthy, but take your time. This is going to be really important later on in math.

Rewrite 75 as 74 (3/3):

74 (3/3) - 43 (1/3) = [(74 - 43)] [(3/3) - (1/3)]
= 31 (2/3).

Well, 75 = 74 + 3/3

That should do it.
