There is only one explanation....they're crazy!! I do understand how uncomfortable that makes you though living so close and all. It is just strange when something like that happens so close to home.

There are, of course, many reasons. A common psychological profile of the wife abuser who murders is a man who formed no attachment in the first year of life. Like every baby, he tried, but his mother was unavailable for any number of reasons. Because he couldn't securely attach to mom (why day care is so bad) he lost the ability to attach securely to others and he still has this gaping need for the object, the mom who completes him.
Such a man will hook up with a woman who will stick by him, because she is weak or susceptible to his manipulations or prizes. When such a woman decides to leave such a man, the psychological pain to the man who needs this woman to complete him, to fill that motherless space, is unbearable. In rage, fear, and unfathomable sadness, he destroys that which seeks to destroy him. Either way, he loses because he will kill or she will escape, but he lost in the first year of life, anyway.
Not all people with damage from an unavailable mother in the first few years of life will hurt others physically. Some turn their anger inward with depression or self-destructive behaviors, many are emotionally abusive. Some struggle with emptiness, despite behaving well. Others fill their lives with giving to others, to fill up with love that way.
Not every emotionally unstable adult had an emotionally or literally unavailable mom. Some had lots of physical abuse from dad or mom. And a few survived traumas inflicted by something outside the family. But the reasons the overwhelming majority of those who do horrible things like this do them are contained in the person's memory of their treatment in the first few years of their lives.

People do strange things for strange reasons. Emotions play havoc with peoples lives and often strong emotions like anger, fear, depression can over shadow common sense and result in horrific consequences.

I would like to believe that some people have chemical imbalances in their brain and that's why. I hope it's not because some people are just so rotten.
