The Wife of Bath is written by Geoffrey Chaucer, in the 14th century. In those days, "wife" meant "woman" and "mistress" meant wife The mistress of the house). An actual mistress, as we understand the term today was the prerogative of rich men only. Usually, the man's wife (the woman he was married to) picked out the mistress and decided what privileges the other woman would get, and for how long. Bath is an actual town in England that dates from Roman times. It is called Bath for a really amazing reason -- people used to go to the town to have a bath -- in the pools of sulphuric water all over the town. Supposedly, the bath cured people of all types of diseases. However, considering that there were a bunch of naked men and women together in what was basically a natural hot tub, a lot of women became "magically" pregnant after the bath. Most people never experienced any relief from their sicknesses, though many people did get sicker as sulfur is not very healthy.
