I understand that the current official record stands at 9.77secs, jointly held by Asafa Powell and Justin Gatlin. However, Ben Johnson ran almost that in 1988 (albeit with a little help) and, having achieved the same time four times now, I figure these guys must have beaten it in training or wind-assisted. (Also, I can imagine that the second 100m of Michael Johnson's 1996 world-record time was pretty quick...) So, can anyone say definitively,or at least does anyone have any ideas: what's really the fastest anyone has ever run 100m?

9.77 Asafa Powell so far proven unassisted.
Ben ran it in 1988 Seoul Olympics 9.79, 9.83 at the 1987 Track and Field World Championships.
Donovan Bailey 9.84 1996 Atlanta Olympic games
If you talk about his 2nd half of his 200M record, Michael Johnson had a running start by the time he got to that 100M
If you are going to count running starts you have to include the 2nd leg of the 4 X 100M relay in Atlanta. Glenroy Gilbert was said to have completed his leg in 9.69

10.03 seconds, some guy from Australia. I ran an 11.a million in severe college, and my ultimate ever in college replaced into an 11.4. i'm white. I have no rationalization for the dominance of blacks in soccer, basketball and T&F short sprint activities (100m,200m). i understand Jeremy Wariner is the quickest male interior the 400m sprint in the present day, he ran a 40 4.3 on the olympics, yet i do no longer think of that's what you're after.

100m is a 100m, so it does not really matter what Michael Johnson ran in that 200m for the final 100m. The record is what it is, 9.77.

The 100m in the second half of the 200 is always faster because you are already at top speed, you don't have to worry about starting from zero.
