He is on leave for Christmas......And due to be married on January 1, 2007.....His fiance ended up in the hospital X-mas day and is still there....they weren't able to be married and she is in a drug induced coma and on a ventilator....he has kept in contact with his DI, but he was still reported AWOL....should he contact the chaplain first??????

I don't know what the penalties are but surely this can be ironed out!

Yes he should contact his Chaplin and arrange to turn himself in.
After a certain amount of time (I am not sure what the time frame is), it becomes DESERTION and the penalties are much harsher.
I am sorry to hear about his fiance, too bad he didnt go back to the service and get permission to extend his leave, then he would have had one less thing to worry about during this very trying time.

Yes, and hire a military lawyer. The sooner he gets in touch with the chaplain the better. He should have also contacted his superiors the minute her condition deteriorated. I wish the best for him.
