The Portuguese Man O' War (Physalia physalis), also known as the bluebubble or bluebottle, is commonly thought of as a jellyfish but is actually a siphonophore—a colony of four sorts of polyps.
The sting from the tentacles is potentially dangerous to most humans; these stings have been responsible for several deaths, but usually only cause excruciating pain. Detached tentacles and specimens washed up on shore can sting just as painfully as the full creature in the water, for weeks after detachment. The venom can travel up to the lymph nodes and may cause, depending on the amount of venom, more intense pain. In extreme cases medical attention is necessary.
Hot water or ice are 2 common treatment to degrade the toxin an d control pain. I don't think it's the frequency of stings so much as the severity that makes this creature so well known.

Jellyfish don't "attack". They float aimlessly around, and if someone brushes against them, their nematocysts (stinging cells) discharge automatically. If many people in a given area are being stung by a particular kind of jellyfish, the question to ask is, "what is responsible for the increase in the population of this jellyfish species?".

Because they are prolific ocean dwellers around coastal regions where people swim, hence, if you are in their natural territory you just might get stung.
