Although dempseys are rather slow growers, eventually you will need to upgrade your tank. The tiger barbs will probably end up being lunch when the dempsey gets large enough, but if you separate them before hand, you should be fine. Minimum size aquarium for a Jack, in my opinion, is a 40 gallon breeder.

While the JD is small, the barbs will be fine, but you will have to separate them if you don't want them to be a snack.

No tiger barbs are too small to live with a Dempsey long term. Also 20 gal is too small.

That is a risk you are talking about. Jack Dempsey's are superaggresive fish and anything you put with them may be fish food. Depends on the fish's disposition towards other fish. If not compatible try a red devil or oscars.

i have jack dempseys and they have slowely killed every other fish but themselves. My big jack dempsey his name is Hook because man oh man is he mean. I think 6 more fish will be way to many for a 20 gal so ya know. Good luck

bettachris has a free fish forum where u can find better answers,

but from what he is telling me, JD cichlids are too large for a 20 gallon, and are aggresive cichlids, so it wouldnt be a suitable home for it with tiger barbs.
