Mice make little stores all over their living enviroment, to keep food. It is a natural ingrained behavior. In the wild, mice will have hundreds of hiding spots, that they keep their food in. They do this so if one place if "robbed", by an animal, that they will not loose their entire store. Hope that this helps.

Is it like a mix of pellets and seeds? If so, they're digging around for their favorites and tossing the rest :)

Mice like to hide and bury food to save it for later. It's like they are saving up for winter. It's natural.

my guinea pig does the same thing. give them only the amount that they can eat and let them spill it. it'll just be harder for them to get to it when they are hungry. it stopped my piggy from doing it so much because he wants to be able to eat when he is hungry . . .

are they eating the food? it could be a sign that they don't like the taste of the food.
