The military doesn't need a bunch of wannabees that are going to cry like little girls when it comes time for a real fight....but it's a nice thought.

Years ago, one of France's finest fighting forces (according to legend) was the French Foreign Legion, comprised mostly of criminals from not only France but other countries as well. I doubt it would work today in this country but I'd be all for giving it a try.

Every time I see a question like this, sending criminals to Iraq, I wonder why someone:
a) wants to have American foreign policy carried out by murderers instead of the fine military personnel who carry it out today
b) wants to reward criminals with freedom instead of punishment
c) could possibly think the high amount of discipline and dedication to duty military troops have could be replaced with the selfish, thoughtless mindset of criminals.
and finally, d) has such low regard for America that they would put weapons in the hands of dangerous people and have them mix with decent troops, endangering those who serve as the brave volunteers our military is made up of.
Now I know you don't really want these things. And I really feel you, in your heart, want these bastards to rot in prison. And I'm sure you want the proud traditions of the military to continue.

Being a 'tough guy' does not qualify you for being a soldier. This is demeaning to the military everywhere! Thats all we need...a bunch of unorganized hooligans over there...creating more of a mess. That would distract the soldiers, and force them to have to worry about them...not the enemy.

This presents an oxymoron. They're doing a life sentence, and you want them to fight for freedom? Who's freedom? I don't think they'd be royal anyway. Do you?

A question along with this would be...
Could you trust them enough to train them to use a deadly weapon and not turn on you?
It would be a quick solution, but I don't think that it would be very wise.

They would probably run. My opinion is that they are only "tough" when they find someone who cannot or won't fight back.

soldiers represent their nation as well as fight for it... atrocities that are committed by soldiers happen many times by men that shouldn't have been in the army in the first place....
