Ovulation happens approximately 8-10 days after the last day of a woman's period. After that a woman has approximately 24-72 hours during which the "egg" can be fertalized. If no fertilization occurs the "egg" travels down the falopian tubes and into the uterus (this takes about 6 days) where it resides for another week or so before menustration begins. So, it does happen before the period.

Well since ovulation takes place before a period can take place, I'm inclined to say ovulation takes place first.

You ovulate first. When you ovulate, the lining of the uterus builds up in anticipation of pregnancy. If you don't become pregnant, the lining sheds. That's your period.

You ovulate first, then if the egg is not fertilized, the uterus sheds its lining, hence your period.
