My Grandpa used to use Efferdent or Polident (denture cleaner) tablets and super hot water. I also heard you can use Alkaselzer, the effervesance bubbles out the nicotine and "stuff."
Also most of the tobacco stores sell liquid pipe cleaner. I think it's call "Grunge out". Alcohol (91% you can get at any drug store) also works great used with a course pipe cleaner.

I would suggest that.
I regularly (once a week) run it under hot tap water, shake it about, rinse and repeat, sometimes using a pipecleaner for little spots.
Alcohol based liquids work well to break apart oily resin, so use of rubbing alcohol on a swab is a suitable means as well.
