The goldfish is gasping for air, and that isn't good. Bettas breath from the top because they have specialized gills for it, but goldfish don't. Because of their high metabolic waste system, Goldfish create more poop than any other fish. More poop, more toxins in the water. Even with perfectly clean water, there just isn't enough oxygen in water for a goldfish. The common myth that goldfish can be kept in a bowl without an aeration system is completely false. This is like putting you under water with just a tiny cocktail straw and expecting you to get enough oxygen by gulping through the straw. Please get an aeration system for your goldfish. This really is cruel to the fish. And while the girl above me is right about the oxygen, you actually need a minimum of 10 gallons of water per goldfish. This is the world's best website/chat site for goldfish. Thanks!

The person who said that goldfish can breathe air is wrong. Betta fish can, but not goldfish. They are at the top because the more oxygenated water is at the top. Goldfish need a lot of oxygen in their water. You CANNOT put a goldfish in just a bowl or tub of water!!! They are very dirty fish and need a filter. Your fish needs a larger tank with a proper filter. Figure that you need 2 gallons of water for each inch of goldfish. Remember, they can grow to over 10 inches long. Also make sure that you are changing at least 10% of your water once a week to keep it clean and free from ammonia. That'll help your little fish from suffocating to death. Good luck!

If there is food on the surface then he's eating, otherwise it means that there is not enough oxygen in the water and you might need to put an air stone in, connected to an air pump, for bubbles.

It is breathing, goldfish can breathe oxygen from the air. It could also be thinking you are about to feed it as well.
