Kids that age love magic whether it is set in medieval times or present. They learn well with analogy so good vs evil is always a good theme. They like to feel safe and think that the world is OK when the evil is vanquished. I wish you good luck, I know my children love, Jack Whyte, C. S. Lewis, John Christoper, and my all time favourite Prince Ombra by Roderic MacLeish.

I agree, kids don't know what's going on today. They probably don't need to either. Base this story in the past, or in the future. Both are good ideas. Just pick the one that fits the story best.

Children that young probably won't be very interested in any modern wars. I'd go with the medieval/magical theme.

I would say recent, maybe even future. Sadly when kids hear "days of yore"....they tend to turn their noses up at the thought (though I would have loved it at 12...but I'm weird).
Good luck with whatever you decide.

My first theory to this question replaced into "This Lullaby" by potential of Sarah Dessen becaust Dexter and Remy are purely great cute. :) Deb Caletti writes great teenager romances. i've got study "the character of Jade" and "Wild Roses" that are the two fantastically sturdy. i individually enjoyed "the character of Jade" extra. it relatively is a pair of female named Jade who meets a guy named Julian (i think of? it relatively is been a mutually as) in any case, Julian has a son and the tale is approximately their relationship and such. it relatively is great. "Wild Roses" is a pair of musician's daughter who falls for a youthful violinist. i'm hoping that this facilitates. :)

well i would go with the fantasy magical theme, its pretty much all i read, or maybe even somehow mix fantasy and modern themes, but thats just my opinion :)
EDIT: also, can you email me the title if you do get it written and published? i would read it no matter what the theme, and it sounds pretty good, (my email is uo_ismylife@yahoo.com)
good luck with your story :)

Almost all kids like Medieval times and stuff like that. Gypsies, elves, fairies, trolls, dragons, that kind of stuff. I know I always did :)
