The image usually comes from the roles they're given early in their careers.
For Clint it was, "the Good, the Bad & the Ugly"
Sly may be the exception on the group. He created the Rocky character.

Clint started with the Spaghetti western (cowboy)movies and transited to Dirty Harry.
Bruce -started with TV Detective series. Had a fight with Rob Lowe for showing tapes of him and Demi Moore when they were still a hot item. But usually as you said they were spiced up to make or unmake them.
