Toyota are good but have their problems with weak heads. Honda are also responsible for the Rover 800 so keep away from anything with a V6 engine, Nissan and Mazda are very reliable, but Nissan have a slightly better ride. I'd actually suggest you looked at Mitsubishi. They have much more experience with suspension than any of the others so you get a much more comfortable car, and are as reliable too. The Charisma is nothing of interest but you could get a very new one for your money (1999-2000) they are much better than the surveys suggest and very reliable. they're boring to drive but then so are all Japanese cars with the exception of their sports range.

Look for a good deal on Toyota and Honda for reliability. You might get lucky and get a high mileage with a relatively recent rebuilt engine or tranny. Listen to what everyone is saying about watching for rust. Wouldn't do for the bottom to drop out while driving 80+ Km per hour!

For that money in England, I bought a Nissan Sentra. It was a 5 speed 1.5 litre, It had 60000 miles and only one owner. It was 6 years old. It had a sunroof. That was one of the best deals I have ever had. Too bad my then girlfriend totalled it. I even parked it for a year - went to it and it started first time.

Any of the above are reliable but all suffer with rust problems. Also all are EXTREMELY expensive to repair if/when things go wrong.
Personally I'd go for a mark 3 astra. That money should get you a pretty decent 96/97 one.

Go for a Nissan Micra 1.2 GSX circa 1990. A great little car, grips like a mountain goat, tilts like a 2CV. I love the little car you can really throw it around. Also does great wheel spins will do a ton if pushed.

you should spend a tiny bit extra and get like an 89 accord or something. they're extremely reliable, as long as you don't drive it off a cliff. Mine has 1991 has 200k miles on it, and it runs like it's new!! amazing.
