Broomball is a popular recreational ice sport originating in Canada and played around the world. It is played on a hockey rink, either indoors or outdoors, depending on climate and location.

Broomball is played on a standard hockey sized ice rink. Instead of sticks and pucks, you use stiff brooms to bat an inflated rubber ball (a bit larger than a softball) from one end of he rink to the other. Instead of skates, you use thick soft rubber running shoes which help prevent you from slipping too much on the ice.

The object of the game is to score on the goalie, just as in hockey. Only difference is that the goalie usually doesn't have all that padding like a hockey goalie does.

There are usually only two periods instead of three, and teams will change ends at the half. You still have a goalie, two defenders and three forwards.

It is very similar to hockey. I have played it before. The only difference is that you use brooms instead of hockey sticks and you don't use skates you use boots or shoes. There are goals and you try to get the ball into them. It is played on ice so it is kind of crazy. Just be careful, I got hit in the mouth with a ball and had to get three stitches in my lower lip.

It takes as long as you want. It is like field hockey on ice (NO SKATES) only you get a miniature broom (like in the lobby at McDonald's) for a stick, and you tie the bristles together to make it more clublike. The ball doesn't hurt as much as a field hockey ball, either, and you have lots of choices (playground ball, soccer ball). Try three 20-minute periods just like hockey. Wear pads on anything you don't want to break when you fall (knees, elbows, butt, etc) and wear a helmet!
