You would have to hear them sing scales or extremely demanding songs to actually determine their range. Singers who actually have range stats have been tested in a standard battery of scales. If you're a soprano, you probably don't have the range of an alto or a tenor. The extreme voices like soprano and bass are usually limited in range, while the middle voices enjoy a wider range on both ends.

Most singers have a two and one half octave range. A few have three or more. The occasional genetic freaks have six or eight.
