Usually, they'll call you (actually an outside PR firm will conduct the poll) Polling is a pretty complicated science and in order to get an accurate poll with a low margin of error, they have to determine where to call to hit big cities, small towns, different ethnic groups and economic segments.

If everyone were allowed to vote on their own, you couldn't stop multiple voting and the numbers would be even less representative of what the real division of opinion is.
