I am looking for some tips/techniques for teaching an adult the violin. Every student I have taught has had some previous experience, but with this one we must start from the very beginning. Any advice on where to begin would be greatly appreciated.

I am a private teacher, and I was asking the same question not too many years ago. One of the things that helped me was to hang out on bavs, which is a YahooGroup discussion lists (Beginning Adult Violin Study). You should post that question there; I bet you'd get a lot of good answers.

There is also some information about this on the Violin/Viola FAQ: http://beststudentviolins.com/PedagogyTech.html#3

I learned when I was really younge but I know how some of the teachers treated me as I got older really bothered me. Talk to them like they are an adult... many of my teachers talked to me like I was in the 2nd grade. And have a ton of patience because adults get frustrated more quickly in my experience. If you can figure out what their learning style is (doing, listening, reading) it can really help for explanations and their depth of learning.

Basic note reading, fingering, and use of the bow. I highly recommend using thin slices of colored tape for basic fingering and maybe dots on the bow for proper positioning. It will take awhile longeer for an adult than a child, but if your student really wants to learn this it will happen!
