Ibanez GSR200 $199
Better than the equally priced Fenders/Squiers

Bass guitar is just intrinsically more difficult (physically) than 6 string guitar, as the bass is heavier and the strings are thicker.

However, you can find smaller bodied bass guitars (like the fine Fender Squier Bronco Bass) that are alos less expensive. These are referred to as "short-scale" bass guitars, and still sound about as good as any other student-level bass.

Musicians Friend (like an on-line version of guitar center) sells many bass guitar packages that include everythig you need to get started. Check out the Epiphone SG Bass package: cool looking, good quality, and a nice price.

good luck!

hard to say. the cheaper the guitar, the harder it will be to play unless you get lucky. the cheaper ones tend to be "slapped" together and the more expensive ones have time and effort put into them, so that the action is light and effective, the intonation is correct, there usually isn't any warped pieces, and the pickups tend to be of higher quality meaning a higher quality sound. you can get some Fender Squire models from guitar shops (dont buy from a retailer like wal mart or target. those are the chinciest pieces of rubbish.) for around 3-400 bucks. sometimes even cheaper. but if you go to an authorized dealer, the sales employees working there will be more than happy to offer good advice as well.

There are a couple options you have. As a teacher, this is what I tell my students. You can go to your local music store and check out what they have. Peavey, Fender, and Ibanez all make quality instruments for a low price. I'm particular to the Peavey ones. Or, you can check on Ebay. I have bought a number of used instruments on there, and you can get a name brand one pretty cheap. Either stick with a brand you've played in a music store, or you know pretty well. As for ease of play, most all basses can be adjusted to the player, whether they want a low or high action. It is not until you are more advanced in your playing that you need a more finely tuned more expensive bass. So check out the music stores, check out the internet, and go with what looks best for the price. Best of luck!

Try First Act at Walmart and other similar stores. I've played pro for 25 years, and recently, when I found myself without a guitar, I found a First Act Telecaster on sale for $60. I've already played it in a gig and it rocks!! Department store guitars are supposed to have cheap wood, cheaper hardware, and even cheaper electronics and workmanship. NOT SO with First Act. I had actually played 2 other First Act guitars before, and they rocked. That's why I took a chance on this one.
Not much money, and they sound great!!

You could try a bass starter pack from Fender (some other brands have them too). It comes with all the basic stuff he'll need. I got one when I first started playing guitar and it worked out fine.

ford what you said is not always true because did you know that warick and samick basses are made in the same factory and pn the same assembly line it just that they put a warrick sticker on one and a samick on the other. you are just paying for the name. I know this is true as i have a friend who works for warrick
