My little bro wants to try his hand with electronic music. I've decided to buy him a drum machine for his birthday, but I know NOTHING about electronica. I've been leaning towards something from the BOSS Dr. Rythym series (good?/bad?).

For some reason, all product descriptions on-line are aimed towards people with DJ experience. My questions are very basic: Do drum machines support self playback, or do I need to buy speakers? Does the machine require additional equipment, or can it be used as stand alone? I'm sure eventually he'll get more equipment, but for now he really just wants the drum machine.

Also, does anyone know of any books that might give him a little direction/aid. Thanks in advance.

Great gift, and a great brand to go with. First, is your brother a musician? If so, sneak around his stuff and look for a guitar/bass/keyboard amplifier. If you find one, check to see if it has 1/4" inputs labeled "AUX IN"; if his amp has one, then he can just plug the drum machine in and jam along to the sound coming out of the amplifier.

If not, does he have a P.A. system? Probably, if he's a DJ, but check out what he already has, and hopefully the equipment he already has would be compatible.

A great place to check out people's opinion on music equipment is:

you can search for gear reviews by manufacturer, price range, equipment, etc.

good luck!

BOSS is a good choice. You will most likely need some type of amplification system. If you have a audio system ie CD player, stereo receiver etc. you may be able to patch the drum machine into it. For the best sound quality get a keyboard amplifier. The drum machine should come with an instruction book explaining how to create basic rhythms. For more complex rhythms try the Roland Drum Machine Dictionary

It type of relies upon, yet i'm happy to work out you're more desirable on objective in the route of recognize-how my attitude (you nonetheless are not thoroughly there). Programming drums as in taking actual samples of drum sounds and then programming the rhythm DOES have soul. For drum machines vs stay drums (as in an actual dude taking section in the drums), i'd say I choose drum machines in many circumstances because once you application the rhythm, you would possibly want to confirm it comes out ideal. yet a stay drummer would not continuously manage to maintain that rhythm precisely ideal and he will be tempted to deviate when you consider that its complicated and boring to maintain the very similar rhythm manually for 5 minutes or so. yet when he can do it, then it truly is cool and could be basically as solid. yet i do not play drums so i really do not recognize even if its straightforward or complicated to maintain the rhythm ideal, yet I genuinely recognize it works out completely in case you application it. weird and wonderful sounding man made default drums in many circumstances do not have soul except they do actual sound like authentic drums. yet drums do not make or smash a music on my own. a good pattern can triumph over undesirable or weird and wonderful sounding drums. yet of route its more desirable to have solid sounding drums. i'd say as a regular rule, man made sounds haven't any soul. yet keep in concepts that's only a regular OVERRIDING form. Like after I say "the mainstream sucks" i do not actually propose all of it, I basically propose in many circumstances it more desirable typically than not sucks on the instantaneous. So mainly, man made sounds frequently tutor wack, yet not something is determined in stone. there are countless solid beats that were created from man made sounds, regardless of the indisputable fact that the overpowering quantity of crap overshadows them. BQ: i'd basically say something has soul if it sounds solid. It strikes you emotionally indirectly. that's the objective of music. in the different case, it has no soul. BQ2: Idk, yet I under no circumstances seen computing device particular effects as a nasty problem. BQ3: of route it takes more desirable ability to manually play the drums (stay drums).
