Why do you need a rectal exam... Im 26 and I've been to the gyno my fair share and NEVER had one done there. I had one done once when I went to the hospital for dehydration. They lube up a GLOVED finger and feel around for bumps. It didnt hurt. More like pressure than anything else.

FYI a GOOD OB/GYN will periodically conduct a rectal exam concurrent with a pelvic. This method provides a better 'feel' of the organs and can provide valuable information for the doctor in determining how well or not well you are doing.

Rectal exams are not painful. The physician uses a lubricated gloved finger and what you mainly feel is pressure.

I have had them for the past few years when I go in for my exam and I will tell you that IT IS NOT FUN but you will survive. I don't know how to tell you step by step how it happens but your doc will give you a heads up on when it's going down. I am 29 and apparently my cervix is tilted so that's why he has to do that to feel my cervix better. Sucks but it could be worse I suppose. You have a good doctor b/c doing that means that he is doing a thorough exam....some people think it is crazy and say they have never had to do that but all of our bodies are different and you wouldn't want him to overlook something that could become a problem!

It doesn't feel that much different from the manual portion of a pelvic exam. It will be done after the rest of your pelvic exam, of course, but it should be done. It's just a way to double-check things, but from a slightly different angle.

It feels alittle strange like something going in that should be going out. It's not painful it just feels strange. I've had one with my GYN exam for years now.
