Recently after attending a 12 step meeting and identifying myself as an alcoholic/addict, I called someone from the meeting and during the conversation I said perhaps then that is not what I am, and thinking about it perhaps I need to attend another type of meeting. For me it seems like I almost always get into relationships in which I am the caretaker, rescuer, or enabler. In our area we do not have many 12 step meetings except for AA, NA and Al-Anon. So I do not know which of these meetings that I belong to or should go to or perhaps none of these and another one is more appropriate. If I am not an AA, NA or addict then do i need to go back and make ammends to these people for making the comment that I am?

Only you know for sure if you are an addict or not. I am someone who has done a lot of "things" that could have turned into addiction and sometimes I thought I was an addict. The 12 step programs were not for me even if I was an addict. It has been one year since I have walked away from my former lifestyle and I have no temptation to go back. What I would recommend to you is to start studying the bible. Take the focus off of the wordly aspects of your life just a little bit and focus on the higher, spiritual aspects. That is what worked for me. Many people are not "programmable". You might be one of them. As far as making ammends, I don't think you caused those people any harm so I would just forget about it.

You dont need to apologize. You know something is wrong...
you just cant figure out exactly what to do about it. Allynon is for
people who are affected by addicts...example: your parent is an alcoholic, your boyfriend is a druggy....etc.

Just because you are a caretaker, rescuer does not mean
you have a problem.....per say. I, too, am a caretaker, rescuer, enabler. I found a counselor and got to the bottom of my issues.
I am now more aware of why I behave certain ways and I have
learned to spot the "red flags" of certain situations.
Something has happened in your life to make you this way.
What you need to do is try to find out what that is and move
forward......heal.

Only you are responsible for you. Only you can change you,
but help is always available.

Good luck.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.

If you're wondering whether or not you have a problem with drugs or alcohol, then I'd say the best standard is whether your consumption of drugs and alcohol impacts your life and your relationships with people.

Everyone has their own standards and limits. A guy who drinks beer every day may not have a genuine problem. For a different man, this would be a problem.

If you have a problem just leaving it alone, booze or whateer, cravings and always thinking about it or jonesing for it until you just give in to the urge, then youre hooked. Never been in that situation so sorry, can't direct you to a therapy but if you have like a school counselor or something they can. Also therye's the Internet....

Maybe your drinking/drugs is for a reason. Are you depressed, stressed or deal with anxiety? If so, see a M.D for some antidepressants or paxil. You may not even need a program maybe just the right people to speak to and good friends.
