I'm going to say the obvious here and go with Harry Potter for starters if she hasn't already read them. They are easy to read and really involving, once you pick it up you can't put it down. And The Neverending Story is soooo fantastic, and Roald Dahl books are great although they might be a little childish for that age. Like the others said, the Narnia books and The Hobbit are also great. If she's a really advanced reader then Magician by Raymond E Feist is fantastic, one of my most favourite books... and the Tomorrow, When the War Began series by John Marsden is great too - I think it's aimed at people in their mid-teens though.
I hope there's something she likes in the schmozzle that was my answer : )

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

Those are very appropriate for a 12-year old, and are interesting to both boys and girls alike.

There are seven books in the series (the first one was made into a movie last year... "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe"), and I've read all of them at least twice.

The Princess Diaries are pretty good - at least the first two. Harry Potter, obviously. She could also just take a trip to the library and browse through the young adult section.
