Ah, the river. That's..."the" river. The Colorado. You cross it four times between Austin and my old home town. My old man caught beaucoup catfish out of the Colorado. We had a place just south of Wharton, where the water was chest deep when you jumped in. Right across from a sandbar and Pierce Estate. They owned most of Wharton and a big chunk of Matagorda Counties. A green river. Usta come out of its banks when we got a big rain...right up into Larry's Mexican Restaurant. Empties into the Gulf at Matagorda Beach. Many a folk drowned there, too dumb to read the "No Swimming" signs, because of the nasty currents and undertows. Ran right beside the Riverbend Tavern, where my boy blew out every light in Matagorda during a gig back in, oh, '98, I think. The river I learned to swim in. The river my old man sunk my boat when he hit a piece of submerged 30" pipe.

Good times.
