I want to make some with the 'Disney Princess' theme to go with my daughters room and 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' for my own. Thanks ahead of time. :)

Yes, it's easy. Most hardware stores carry clear plastic outlet and switch plates. There is usually a paper insert, remove it and use it as a template. Cut out wallpaper or whatever you want that is thin like paper and line the inside of the switch/ outlet plate with that material. I've used fabric and wallpaper. Put the plate up and screw back on, you're done. Can be done in a few minutes. If the paper or fabric doesn't seem to stay in place before you can get the screws in , use a few tiny dabs of glue stick to hold the decorative paper or cloth in place.

you could find wallpaper or pictures and attach to wood that has the proper holes precut. Then seal for easy cleaning. For safety, you'd have to bevel the edges and that's a pain with plywood......you end up putting on wood putty edges and sanding down.

You could buy cheap light switch covers and attach appropriate art.

Or combine the two by using the blank covers and extending with with plywood, foamcore, etc to fit whatever artwork you are doing over the top. That's probably what I would do as the foamcore is easy to cut into shapes. ModgePodge or whatever is the brand name now would go over the top for protection of art from washing.

Now if you are really clever, you can make your own out of clay, shape, paint and fire in a kiln. Basically make a tile.

Buy the cheap off white ones at most stores like Wal*mart.
I would use Krylon Fusion (Which ranges from 3 to 4 dollars a can) as a base coat. Or if you have a little more money, go with two colors, black, and pink.
Either cut out the images out of a magazine and use a cheap bottle of clear gloss paint from the craft aisle, or use more paint and try your hand at painting what you want on them. Like roses and crowns for your daughter, and a moon and spooky tree for you.
I would use a base coat, and I would use a sealer for all of it. Base coats help paint and glues stick better, and sealers make it harder wearing and easier to clean **** off of.

You can get blank white lightswitch plates at Walmart and the Home Depot. Then, if you have the pictures from magazines or wherever, you can just glue them on. Then, I would recommend taking the clear plastic laminating paper (generally used for covering textbooks, you can also find it at walmart) and put that over top of the images to keep it from getting smudged and dirty.
:)
