If given a choice a hermit crab will chose a shell which does not stand out in nature and could be easily camoflaged. You will sometimes see painted shells on hermit crabs at a pet store, one of the first things these crabs do when given the chance is change their shell to something more natural.

No. Hermit crabs are color blind. The only consideration they take into account is the shell's size.

no it does not it depends on the size of the shells you get them i had hermit crabs for 16 years

No, not at all. They are affected by the amount (variety) of different shells present, the types of shells present, and the quality of the shell.
