to have a cell phone? I see a lot of elementary kids with them lately and that seems too young to me!

If they can't pay for it themself, then they should not have a cell phone. That's what Dragon thinks. There are phones at school they can use to call home. When they can afford to get their own and pay fer it, then they can have one.

I guess I can understand about safety, but wouldn't it be just as easy to turn the cell phone against a child who was in danger? What kidnapper is going to let the kid make a call, or let them be in a position to be alone long enough to make a call? Honestly, i think things have gotten a bit out of hand. I think that if the kid can pay for it, or if the kid does things around the house to "pay" for the use of the phone, then it's okay. If the kid is pretty young, then get them the one that can only be programmed with certain numbers. As they get older (probably anywhere from 16 on) they will be working and will be able to contribute. At that point, they should get a regular cell phone.

In this scary day in age, I am thinking when they enter the 1st or 2nd, forsure by the 3rd grade, only for cases of emergency, like the phones that give you 2-4 numbers to program in and the kids cannot just start dialing various phone numbers. They just push a button. I feel like in the instance of a kidnapping or altercation it could be very beneficial for a child to call a parent for an emergency.

I think about age 11/12. Where I live any younger there would be more of a chance of being mugged.

My daughter is in 6th grade and she has one but then again she has activities and has to keep in touch with me and her pals.

when they're somewhere around seventh grade, they should have one. i heard of this 10-month-old who is addicted to her mom's blackberry!
