Uh...if I can understand this mess...you wanna crew for only one hour? I've crewed for a couple of shows my redhead's company put on...it's a bit more work than you can do in only one hour. But these were real performances, not some school play.

It's English and spelling like this that gives people the impression that the stage crew are all uneducated flunkies who could never make it in any other area of show business.

Stage crew people should read and preferrably memorize the script, along with all the rest of the cast and crew. It's going to be your job to help keep everything flowing smoothly backstage, and knowing what's supposed to be going on in front of the curtain is a big part of being part of the team. You may have to dress in black and be one of the ones to go out there and move props between scenes, and in order to do that, you need to know the scene. Or, your job may be in getting things ready for their entry, helping a performer with a quick costume change, or operating backstage sound effects. Each crew member has a responsibility. If the cast has rehearsals one hour a week, then I guess it's okay for the crew to show up that often too. But any decent play is going to get more and more hectic as opening nears. And you'll need to be there for all of those meetings, not just when it's convenient for you. There's going to be very few, if any, jobs that don't require you to be there more than once in awhile -unless it's janitorial.

Being on stage crew is more or less a thankless job, but the crew is just as vital to a good production as the major performers are. Everyone's in it together as a team.

Keep your set props minimal. A simple block in the center of the stage can be used for anything whatsoever, given the correct application of blocking, direction, etc.. Also, keep lighting minimal as well. One center stage light and a spot that follows an actor(ess) into a scene is all that is necessary. You then allow you actors/actresses to build images of the scene through their expressions, motions, and emphasis on portions of script. Proper blocking becomes even more essential then usual when props are not used. The actors and actresses must build the scene on the minds of the audience. Although not mime, think of mimes when rehearsing. A good mime can build a scene without using a single proper or word. The actors and actresses in your play will have the benefit of dialog. Although a strong set can compliment good acting, bad acting will be the death of a play with or without props or an elaborate set design. Rely on your actors' and actresses' ability. Thanks~ Ben

Unfortunately, even high school theater requires a committment of time. I'm sorry, but I can't think of any backstage "crew" position you could do that would only require you to be there for one hour, once a week. I suppose you could probably help build the set, but an hour really isn't that much time in the grand scheme of things.

then do it but dont run it . most stage crews have a stage manager work on the crew , but don't be in charge if you can't be there very often.
