I am 8 weeks pregnant and I know I have a while to go. But I am just so scared of childbirth. I plan on having the epidural but I am still scared of the pain I still may feel, and also the pain of the epidural needle. I know it happens every day and women are fine but I am just not one that can take pain all that well. Any suggestions to help me?

Relax, because you have to endure it weather you like it or not... and you still have soooo long to go. If you start obsessing about it now you'll go crazy by the time you're ready.

Plus... it's not THAT bad. Its not the most comfortable thing in the world, but you wont die from it. Trust in yourself and trust in your doctors, you'll be just fine.

Might I suggest some prenatal courses and some lamaze or bradley courses as well. They may help to ease your mind by making you feel confident about what you're going to go through.

Knowledge is power :)

Its not that bad, i was in natural labor for almost 40 hours and i was fine, i wouldnt do the epideural, not that i think we should suffer through pain, or that anythings wrong with it, but i found great relief from the pain by being able to get up and move around, i took several showers and let the warm water run on my belly, and it helped so much. When you have an epideural you are confined to a bed and cant get up, they can also be shown to slow labor down, and who wants that? And as soon as that little baby comes into the world you wont even remember what it felt like, dont stress about this stuff now, relax and enjoy your pregnancy, its such a miraculous time and before you know it you will have a kid going off to college. Best of luck to you!

Well, calm down and don't panic. You may not even feel the epidural, I didn't. The labor pain was so bad that the epidural didn't hurt at all in comparison. Once the epidural is in, the only thing you will feel is like you are taking the biggest poo-poo of your life. I felt nothing but hot or cold sensations after it took affect. I think that many women, PARTICULARLY TELEVISION, over dramatize child birth. My labor was about 5 hours from water break to birth. Read as many books as you can on child birth. That may help you calm down.

what will happen with the epidural is before they stick the actual needle in they will inject a numbing solution into your back in the spot the epidural will go. i will be blunt and this solution burns like fire, but only for a few seconds and the only thing you feel after that is pressure. during your childbirth, if you feel it wearing off, you may ask for a second dose....i had 3 with my first daughter. i hope that you have a great hospital picked because it can make all the difference. go and speak with your ob/gyn and have her take you around and explain everything that will happen. good luck!!!

I know the feeling, i've had 2. And believe me its well worth what you go through. As for the pain of the Epidural, it feels like bee sting, no big deal. And it takes all the pain away, i would recommend it. Just dont look at the needle.

definitely get the epidural, take childbirth classes they will give you some kind of an idea of what to expect. A million women could pass you by saying it's nothing, but that won't matter the fear will still be there.

Get some great relaxation techniques in place for the next 32 weeks, the more relaxed you are going in to it the easier it is (so I'm told... I had three babies but had them all by c-section) but also the more relaxed you are the easier your pregnancy will be.

Hey girl. Well, Ive read through these answers and they all seem on the spot. Your body already knows what to do. Thats how we were made. Once you see your baby, you will forget all the pain. It makes it all worth it.
Because every woman is different, the epidural is ultimately your choice. You'll know when the time comes whether you'll need it or not.
Best of luck. God bless.

I didnt have an epideral and I was scared out of my mind about how painful it was going to be. I did have some pain medication in my IV but I made it through ok. I had back labor because she was positioned wrong that was horrible pain but I still made it through it. You are stronger than you think. Have a understanding partner that will help you breath and bring magazines and relaxing music

Take a childbirth class too. They were fun and helped

Your body is designed to do this, and when you go into labour, it really does take over and do what it's supposed to. They won't give yo the epidural right away, so will be experiencing some of the labour.... but it's okay.
Become as mentally prepared as you can.... attend prenatal classes, watch videos (not the TV birth stories.... those are edited and don't show you reality), talk to Moms, be prepared for anything to happen... most of all stay calm, breathe!!!

The medical staff will do everything they can to help you out...

i wont lie to you it dose hurt, but the moment you look into your baby's eyes you know its all worth it and you could do it again some day. i am the same when it comes to pain get the epidural it really don't hurt your contractions make sure you don't even feel it. take Lamaze class, make sure to have a good partner because my husband helped the most even though i left claw marks, pulled his hair, choked him etc... make sure they understand. but your only 8 weeks so don't worry about it right now you will stress out and that's bad for your baby so chill out. also read a lot of pregnancy magazines and books. have fun and enjoy your pregnancy get lots of rest because when your baby comes you'll be so busy. good luck

Angel, honey you are only 8wks-do not worry about labor focus on your pregnancy and exercise and eating healthy. No need to stress yourself or the baby out. Besides with my two year old I was given epidural and by the time he decided to come the epidural wore off. My second one decided to come out as soon as I walked into the hospital no drugs were given to me and boy oh boy was it painful. Why am I telling you this?..Focus on a healthy pregnancy. Congrats and best wishes for you and yours.
