Since I lived through it.
Microcomputers are considered to have begun with the publication of Popular Electronics cover story on the Alair 8800 in the January 1975 issue. But this was not easy to use. Personal computers are considered to have begun with the almost simultaneous release of the Apple and TRS-80 appliance computers (take it home and plug it in) in 1977 and the space provided in the 1977 National Computer Conference in Dallas. But the rocket was really launched when IBM introduced their PC in the summer of 1981, when many businesses said "Oh it must be OK, it's IBM" and with the much easier to use Macintosh late the following year. The original Apple usually had 48K of memory while the original PC had 64 or 128K.
