It seems like all teens think about is how they look, brand names, popularity, dating, boyfriends and girlfriends, and magazines How does that make them cool?

i'm a teen and all of the other teens i met are mostly the same. I'm a nerd and i don't care about popularity. I like classical music too.

It doesn't, but they learn that society places a high importance on these things, and they want to be like celebrities. Eventually they learn that most of us are destined to be normal people and they give that up.

That is wrong!
Because I'm a teen and I DON'T care about brand names, popularity, DATING, or magazines. It's a total waste of time. But sometimes I do care how I look, I mean I don't want to look like a hillbilly.

Im 14 and I have a ton of other things on my mind than that. i do admit, many of my peers act this way, but me, and a good group of my friends dont.

I have never even been on a date. I have never had a boyfriend. And in all honest i dont care that i dont. I want to concentrate on high school, and later college.

I want to wait untill I can enjoy those thing like, love and trends and fashion, once I have my life securely placed before me.

I consider myself an intellectual person, and i want to show the world so.

People my age dont understand that what you do now, affects the future. They think staying stupid and ignorant of the world is so cool.

I dont understand it myself. But Im glad I was given the brains to think and at otherwise. To be the best person I can be.

Hey, I know a lot of 20-some year olds who act like teens too. The only difference is that now, their lives revolve around going the bar. I'm 24, I got over the whole "let's get wasted" thing a long, long time ago. Unfortunately, a lot of people I know haven't.

Those teens, and the society we live in, needs to get it's priorities straight.

I'm a teen too. A lot of the jerks at my school are into the stuff you named, but my circle of friends (honors kids) tends to diverge from that. Seems to be an issue of who is more susceptible to the influence of mass media. And according to current trends, it impacts a lot of people.

Classical music is cool. Calculus is too.

Teens are busy trying to find their way in life, their identity. The teen years are filled with insecurities, and conformity gives a feeling of belonging.

It makes us feel like we fit in. If some ppl dont feel cool-they think they wont BE cool. Its obviously a stage. lol. But it defies you. It tells other teens-who you are.

Dating-Is a way teens feel loved. It may also be "cool." and usually its just a way of telling everyone "I like Jonny." 'Going out' is really just meaning "I like so an so."

That's the thing that i don't understand too :) usually (i think) if they want to be cool, and if they want cool friends too-then it's the only way how to be popular and bla bla bla, but i think that peoples who are different are more cooler, because they aren't like every one :D

We are NOT all the same! My group is the geeky one, none of us have a bf/gf, rarely read magazines, have nearly 4.0s, and founded the chess club! How dare you say we are all the same!

no idea. however, tv and the rest of the fashion business has made sure that you only are cool if you are underweight, under-dressed and over made-up
