The exact definition is Emotional Hardcore
Which is a genre of music that split from Hardcore Punk, in the mid80s, because bands wanted to get away from all the violence associated with their music.
Emo is better structured, and more elaborate hardcore punk music. Some bands started to add screamed vocals, and most of the bands seperated themselves from hardcore punk by writing more about life, rather than politics (which punk was all about)

Emo is short for emotional. Orginally, emo was short for "emocore", a strain of hardcore punk that was notable for its obcession with feelings (as opposed to politcs, anger, and smashing stuff up). Then it started to be applied to bands that weren't punk, to fashion trends, to sad-eye kids in the back of class. It's always been mildly derisive, a term used by hater and critis to dismiss something that's overly weepy, self-indulgent, or unironic. Every generation that loves emo bands simultaneously rejects the term while claiming ownership of it - meaning even if they won't admit they love emo, they certainly will say how much they hate everything that's been called emo since them. But still, no one knows what it is.

It's a tag used to describe a musical genre and fans who follow the genre avidly. It combines the pop-punk sound of modern bands (Green Day, etc) with downbeat lyrics similar to that of older post-punk bands (like Joy Division or The Cure).

ok. Emo does no longer advise which you dye your hair black and positioned on all black and such. that's dumb. an excellent sort of folk get 'gothic' and 'emo' at a loss for words and that's stressful. i in my opinion think of labels are ridiculously dumb yet my pals and that i'm getting labeled gothic and emo an excellent sort of the time. They base it on the eyeliner i assume? we don't positioned on all black, we don't whine each and all the time, and we've not got a gaggle of piercings or tattoos. Emo skill emotional. human beings purely assume issues. i'm no longer asserting i'm Emo or Gothic. i'm purely asserting...that's unhappy relatively what human beings say approximately emo =

Its a way you express yourself through music. For example:
The way you dress
The way you act
and your personality or outlook on things
It is NOT people who just wear black
OR look gothic.
Trust me.
