Fess up with your mom. Tell her what happened and be more responsible in the future. You (and possibly your mom) are going to need help getting the nail polish out. Given how quickly nail polish dries, it is probably already set, is hard and will not reconstitute to a liquid form again unless acitone (nail polish remover) is used. Acitone will also take out the color of the carpet.

Best way I would handle the removal, after you have convinced yourself that the acitone was not a good idea, is to cut the effected area of the carpet out and replace it with the same carpet. Hopefully you have a piece of the same material in reserve from when the carpet was originally installed. If not, take it from an area that is inconspicuous.

I use a utility knife and cut as small an area as possible from where the damaged carpet is. Then lay it (the cut out piece) over the area you are going to take the carpet from, and cut a piece as close as possible to the same size and shape. Use a hot-glue-gun to put the new piece back down. After the larger piece is glued into place, blend it in with knap, again from the same carpet, and glue it into place. You may use the hot glue liberally in the first step in replacing the larger piece, but when you are putting the trimmed knap into place, only apply the glue to the lower backing of the carpet, rather than toward the top.

Good luck

You might want to try nail polish remover, but if it's a dark carpet there is a chance it will fade the color or something.

it will never come out all the way. polish remover will spread it. it might make it less noticeable if it's dark colored carpet. you'll be more careful next time:)
