Tin Can Bay was once called tun-kin (aboriginal word for dugong), other names include; Tin-Kin (big fish) and Tindhin (mangroves), Tuncunba - "ba" meaning "place of" and "Tuncun" meaning "Dugong" or "plenty of tucker".
