Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). There's absolutely no doubt about that and I've never heard of anyone disputing this fact. Even those who are not too keen on Bach and who find his music too 'mechanical' still acknowledge him as the greatest composer the world has ever known. Not only did he compose a huge corpus of some of the most beautiful and sublime music, but, by his Wohltemperiertes Klavier, he established the modern tempered 12-note scale that everyone in the West now uses.

In addition to being a prolific composer, he was prolific in another way - he had twenty children. And quite a number of those went on to become composers in their own right.

P.S. to Anna: If you're that keen on Dvorák, you should learn to spell his name correctly. There's an acute accent on the a (to show that it is a long vowel) and there's also a thing called a hacek (like a little v ) on the r , but I can't produce a hacek in this format.

Why on earth do classical buffs always think they have the monopoly on superlatives. Music has always been the pop music of the day. Musical creation did not start with Bach and end with the modern romantic composers. If by great, you refer to strength of melody and memorability rather than musical complexity, you would be better advised to look towards Tinpan Alley rather than the Royal European Courts of yesteryear. My opinion on the worlds greatest composer....Cole Porter, Jerome Kern or Hoagy Carmichael.......which one depends on my mood.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Wrote more & better music a very short amount of time than any other composer of his or any era.
A true genius, taken way too early.

Generally accepted to have been Mozart.

Close run thing with Bach and Beethoven though.

For us Brits, the man who wrote OUR best loved music has to be Edward Elgar.

I would say beethoven, purely based on his 9th symphony.

But Shostakovich and Motzart aint exactly shabby

Motzart was certainly a genius.

He heard a three hour recital at church, travelled for hours and hours home and then transcribe the lot, note perfect, from memory.
And he was only a kid at the time!!

Most would probably say it's between Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Wagner is my personal favorite though.

WA Mozart. He invented the classics and (proportionally, he died young) composed more music than anyone else.
