Hi Maddy,

There's many churches that have missionaries already in Ghana and it's a popular destination for missionary work. The majority of the population are Christians (about 60%), Islam is a popular religion (about 20%) and then there are a whole host of local beliefs (totalling about 20%). The indigenous beliefs are more prominent in the north of the country.

There are many nice things about Ghana, one of which is that people of different religions integrate well and get along with each other and show respect for the different religions.

In some countries you could find it difficult to do missionary work as some people may not welcome your beliefs but in Ghana they will be friendly to you and will listen with interest to what you have to say.

As you're 13 I guess you'd be going with a group of other people, perhaps from your church. This may be the best place to start with your enquiries. Someone in the church may already have experience of missionary work and if not, there's a good chance someone will be able to put you in touch with the right person. It would be preferable to do it this way rather than make enquiries with churches and other organisations in Ghana.

You might want to check out if there are age restrictions on doing missionary work - there won't be any in Ghana so that won't be a problem but there may be back home.

Once you're in Ghana you won't have any trouble finding places. The people are extremely helpful and friendly and will go out of their way to assist you. The main airport is in Accra (the capital city) which is in the south of the country. From here there are regular coach services to all the other major towns and cities (the coach service is called the STC). Getting about locally is easy as there are numerous taxis and trotros (mini bus taxis) which are very cheap.

There's a good chance you'll be able to arrange meals and accommodation through a local church. If not there are plenty of guest houses and cafes, in the major cities there are plenty of hotels as well. If you book into a guest house make sure to ask for an air conditioned room, most rooms aren't and Ghana is a hot and humid country all year round. Without aircon you'll be in for a very uncomfortable night.

The local food takes a bit of getting used to but in the large towns and cities you'll find places serving western style dishes. In smaller towns and in the country the choice of food will be limited and if you don't like the local dishes you'll be surviving on a diet of chicken and rice.

If you don't have any luck asking at your church you might want to send me an e-mail. A friend of my dad's did missionary work in Ghana a little while ago and although I don't know him personally I could ask him for any useful advice.

Good luck, hope it all works out and you get to Ghana. If you do you'll love the people and the country but a couple of words of warning - it's hot, humid and very dirty (rubbish in the streets etc) but that's more than made up for by the friendliness of the people.

This is very interesting to me as I 'm happy to find a kind hearted person who wants to help others. for missionary work first try and get in touch with people on the ground. You can find a list of NGOs on www.ghanaweb.com and you can also get information from the Ghana embassy/consular where you are. Good luck and may God bless you.

Your best bet is to go with an established organization.
Here is one, http://www.globalexpeditions.com/ I've gone with them before, as well as about 6 youth from my church. There is also worldchangers. You should start with a good orginazation. I hope you have a great trip. :)
