Does anyone know if there is a "grammar checker?"

Spell checking technology was very easy to develop compared to a grammar checker.

The biggest issue involved in grammar checking in the need to study the context of the word. Too many words in the English language have multiple grammatically acceptable tenses and uses.

The first thing the "grammar checker" software would have to do is to is to "spell check" the sentence, because it would be even more difficult to diagram the sentence if all the words were not spelled correctly.

Think of all the choices that a good spell checker can help you with, when spell checking a sentance.

The second thing the "grammar checker" software would need to do is to diagram the sentence.

The grammar checker in Microsoft Word is extremely primative. It can be used for stand-alone grammar issues that do not require knowledge about the context of the sentence.

There there are the grammar rules that are better decribed as guidlines because even grammarians can agree to disagee about the fine-point issues about the acceptability of "split infinitives", etc..

There are just too many permutations of grammatically-acceptable English to produce a comprehensive grammar checker today. With all the computer power we have today, we still do not have anything more than the ability to check the stand-alone simple grammar issues.

A comprehensive grammar checker, (something that can identify the context of each word in a complex sentence, for 90% of the words in the English language) is at least five years away. 5 years from now, it may still be five years away as well.

There are many grammar checker software available online. Also, you can have some grammar checking sites online. Some are free and some are paid. You should always go for the paid services as they can give you the most prominent results. Good Luck!

Right here, throw your grammer issues onto Answers, and you'll probably get a corrected sentence, complete with proper punctuation and spelling. Or you can try Googling your request. I am sure there are grammar checking programs available in software form, just don't know where to obtain them.

There are such programs. But, unless you are a strict grammarian, they can be very confusing in the terminology they use, so you could end up thinking "huh? What the heck does that mean?"
(For instance, it might suggest using the subjunctive, or consider objective case)
