I think you had a case of "damping off" - it comes from too much moisture in the soil and applies to seedlings at a young age only ... you don't need to water them much, especially if you started with enough water to begin with. Just get some more and be really careful .... try surfing for herb instructions and you might find something that will make sense to you .... it is so hard to say ... also, this is not the best season the grow things... it is still Winter here in the North East ...it would be better in about 6 weeks ... or wait for the Solstice even ... Best of Luck!

You could have had a fungus attack. Most often this occurs if the air is too saturated or the soil is as well. Start over with new seed, soil and clean area well before.

I've got horrible light in this house for seed starting and I'm not going with the arificial lights again. So I buy the plants already started. Cheaper than building a greenhouse.

I agree with the fungus theory once this happens there isn't much hope.......probably caused by over watering. Only water a plant as much as it is going to use. You can gauge this partly by heat and sun....if it's a hot sunny day they'll use more water so water them more. It's good to let them dry down a bit in between watering, but don't let them completely dry out. Touch your soil....that is a great guage also...if it feels wet - don't water them. If it feels dry - water them. Experiment alittle.
