Do you really need to take singing lessons? I love to sing and am getting over self-consiousness, but unfortunately I don't have any opportunities right now to really get out and do anything. (No money, can't drive, live on a farm 'way out there. :)

There's one thing I know I WOULDN'T want to do, and that is have to go on concert tours all the time... I would actually like to mostly do recording and can start from home as soon as I get the equipment because my uncle has the know-how... or at least some of it. ;)

However, how does that work? Anyone here done it before? What are the opportunities I should look for?

I should mention that I like traditional/folk/religious/classic music and that type, so I'm not going to fit in just anywhere. :D

Thanks so much in advance!

If it is really what you want to do you should always be working to perfect your craft. You should take singing lessons if you never have. Learn about musicians that are doing what you are doing, listen to their music, learn their songs, analyze their style.

Luckily, we have the internet now and websites like myspace can get your music heard for free. After you record stuff, put it on there. Send your CD out to managers, agents, record companies. Also if you want to play a coffee houses, send your music to them too.

Since you have a specific type of music you like, don't disregard all others. They are all connected somehow. I am not sure what "traditional" is, but folk connects to rock, religious connects to gospel, classical connects to... well, thats a hard one. But exploring all types of music will make you a better musician all around.

In the meantime, get out there! Open mic nights, jam sessions, things like this are a great way to get your stage legs and meet other musicians you could work with.

Good luck!

A lot depends on what kind of a singer you want to be and why. What do you want to achieve? Do you want to be famous, or rich? The music business is no picnic;it's hard work, and the demands are stressful. Singing lessons would be helpful, but not imperative if you have natural talent. Right now what you need is experience singing anywhere and everywhere. You need to be heard in order to learn how good you are, or aren't. Good luck.

No..........lessons are not a necessity. Sing when you feel like it. Shower, car, etc etc. Sing what ya feel. Not all music is rock or country. (Sorry NOT including rap as it is all "talk" anyway.) Sing how you can but also try to stretch it a little not a lot or you can lose your ability. I have been in several bands (and am in 3 at the moment) and I have not had any vocal training just sang as soon as I could.
