because people who do drugs often get problems in their life.
they have trouble keeping a job or marriage together and
keeping out of jail. they often neglect their children and have shorter, miserable lives. addiction is not pretty. drugs are
escapist and when you take drugs you are not dealing with your real life (paying bills, picking up the kids from work, doing your college homework, paying your car registration, going to work, helping your spouse, etc.). when you don't tend your real life it gets rotten. you lose your car, house, spouse, kids, freedom.
look at and talk to 50-yr-olds who have done drugs all their life then look at and talk to some 50-year olds who haven't and see which you think is a better option. it is a long term thing. doing it a lot over time is what kills your life.

Because they can take ahold of you whether you want them to or not. I used to do a looooottttttt of drugs. I wasn't a junkie. I was a good student with functioning relationships. I knew that if I wanted to stay that way I'd have to lay off. So I did. Some of my friends didn't. They didn't turn out so well.
Drugs are only bad if you let them make you do bad things. Honestly.

Truth be told, it's, well, not. The more research we do on drugs, which is difficult here in the states due to our TOTAL PROHIBITION, we learn that the "soft" drugs at least appear to cause no temporary or long-term harm. While yes, physically addicting drugs such as cocaine, heroin and its derivitives, and some perscription pills are important to stay away from, they can also kill you.
The stodgy prohibition in America at least is losing footing, slowly. Check out my references if you need persuading on why pot should be legal. More victories for science!
As a thought experiment, just ask yourself some questions if you need to convince yourself that pot remaining illegal is justified. Which kills more per year, alcohol or marijuana? Which do more people seek treatment for? What percentage of automobile related deaths and maimings were caused under the influence of each.
Of course, the reason for prohibition is not simply responsibility, it is due to an effect called "voodoo pharmacology". The illegal drugs, according to the governement, are different from the legal drugs in that they take over your body and mind and control you. Ask one of the over HALF of the American population who has tried marijuana if they thought the drug took over their mind and controlled them, or if it made them violent, or if it changed their outlook on friends or life. Oh, and good luck not getting laughed at if you actually do ask.

POST-EDIT : I relaized I left meth off the list of "idiotic drugs that can kill you and are legitimately dangerous for chronic use". Stay away from the meth kids, that stuff's no fun.

because you will be much more better off than on them - you will be able to have money and better friends - possibly a happier life than an drug induced emotional substitute. you just might enjoy life if you would stay away from drugs altogether.

All the foregoing answers are valid. Drugs are bad for your health (ever hear of meth mouth? Ask your dentist.), addictive, a waste of money, and their purchase gives financial support to all sorts of people whom, if you were to choose intelligently, you would not support. Not to mention illegal.
