I have just finsihed a construction project, and have some small trees along the border of my property that I would like to pull out. What is the proper method to do this?

If your looking to remove the trees for re-establishment then you don't want to damage the roots too much, the proper tool to use would be a (tree spade).. these are specialist pieces of equipment so you would need to find a company with one..

However if you are wanting to just remove them then the easiest way would be to dig a small circular trench around the tree.. (only 4-5 inches wide) but at least 12 inches deep.. (bare in mind most trees root within the top foot of ground) now from here you could just strap it to a tractor or truck and try and pull it out, or using a mini-digger to try and lift it out...cutting off any remaining roots as you go..

Hope that helps...

LOL! 10" diameter tree is big here.
Chop the roots until stump wiggles and yank it out with truck will work, just don't attach to bumper. Today's bumpers are flimsy. Also this depends on what type tree. Nut trees or other tap rooters, you'd better get that root cut! Trees with more lateral roots, chop as much as you can until the stump is fairly loose.

Other route is to cut to ground and then hire someone with a root grinder (sometimes you can rent these) and grind down the roots. Problem is the grinders can only go.......at max.......2 feet down. Often far less deep. Depending on the tree species, sprouting from the roots might be a problem. There are sprays to prevent sprouting but you must have an herbicide license to apply.

i have used a tractor, not a riding lawn mower, but a tractor.fisrt cut the trees down and leave about 3-4 ft above ground so that you can put a chain around it and then hook it to a tractor and pull over and over until it comes up!
but if you live in the country you can burn the stump, roots and all alot cheaper and easier!pile alot of wood up aroung it and get it going really good and keep it going really good and withing 2-3 days the whole stump will burn down into the ground and its roots!and then all you have to do is fill in the hole!

First cut from about a foot (12") of the base around the diameter of the tree and loosen up the roots-then wrap a rope or chain around the trunk of the tree , attach it to your vehicle somehow and pull off. I have found this to be fairly efficient.

If they are healthy, they probably have some fairly strong roots. Your best bet would be to cut them down to 2 or 3 feet and rent a small tractor or backhoe for half a day, from an equipment rental place, and pull or push them out. It would be a lot faster than your truck, if you have one, and easier on it.

All good answers. But if you do one of these DIY answers remember that there is gas lines, eletricial lines, and sewer lines underground. If you manage to "find" one of these pulling roots with a truck or grinding away with stump grinder your cost of the project will soar.
